Battling Back Against Southern California Elder Abuse

Battling Back Against Southern California Elder Abuse

Nearly 1 in 10 elderly persons experience some form of elder abuse, with millions of cases each. Yet statistics tell us that only 1 in 14 cases of elder abuse are ever reported to authorities. This indicates that many thousands of incidents of elder abuse are occurring across Southern California, but the vast majority of them happen without anyone standing up for the rights of elderly persons to be free from abuse. One of the most common and most insidious forms of elder abuse is the unnecessary and illegal use of psychotropic drugs as a means of sedating patients, a tactic often used by nursing homes and assisted living facilities to attempt to cover for poor training and inadequate resources and staff. The AARP reported in 2014 that 1 in 5 nursing home residents “are given antipsychotic drugs that are not only unnecessary, but also extremely dangerous for older patients.”

The unnecessary use of psychotropic drugs is only one form of elder abuse, and other common forms of elder abuse include physical abuse (including improper restraints) from staff and other residents who are not properly monitored; mental and verbal abuse directed at patients and residents; sexual abuse; and neglect, which includes a failure to provide adequate medical care, toiletries, nutrition, and/or safe and clean facilities.
